Waiting on Wednesday: Beswitched

“Waiting On” Wednesday is a weekly event, hosted at Breaking the Spine that spotlights upcoming releases that we’re eagerly anticipating.

This week I chose Beswitched by Kate Saunders. Expected publication: December 13th 2011 by Delacorte Books for Young Readers.

A magic spell has spun Flora into the past. She’s mysteriously swapped lives with a schoolgirl in 1935! No iPod? No cell phone? No hair products? How will she survive?
Now Flora’s a new girl at St. Winifred’s, where she has to speak French at breakfast, wear hideous baggy bloomers, and sleep in a freezing dormitory.
But lots of adventures in the past are amazing even if they are not forever. How will she find her way back to the 21st century?

This title has a lot of elements that I typically like–1930s setting with a time travel theme, for instance.

Waiting on Wednesday: The Haunting of Maddy Clare

“Waiting On” Wednesday is a weekly event, hosted at Breaking the Spine that spotlights upcoming releases that we’re eagerly anticipating.

This week I chose The Haunting of Maddy Clare by Simone St. James.
Expected publication date: March 6, 2012, by NAL.

Sarah Piper’s lonely, threadbare existence changes when her temporary agency sends her to assist a ghost hunter. Alistair Gellis – rich, handsome, scarred by World War I, and obsessed with ghosts – has been summoned to investigate the spirit of nineteen-year-old Maddy Clare, who is haunting the barn where she committed suicide. Since Maddy hated men in life, it is Sarah’s task to confront her in death.

Soon Sarah is caught up in a desperate struggle. For Maddy’s ghost is real, she’s angry, and she has powers that defy all reason. Can Sarah and Alistair’s assistant, the rough, unsettling Matthew Ryder, discover who Maddy was, where she came from, and what is driving her desire for vengeance – before she destroys them all?

This title sounds like a great gothic mystery with an unusual historical setting. I can’t wait to read it!

When Lady Farrell’s husband becomes the prime suspect in the murder, she enlists the help of Dr. Thomas Silkstone–an anatomist and pioneering forensic detective–to solve the murder and prove his innocence.

Though Dr. Silkstone studied medicine in England under the foremost surgeon in the region, his unconventional methods and unfamiliar field of study have made him an outsider. Still, he agrees to examine Sir Edward’s corpse, but the keenest blade he will use is his intellect. He must determine both the cause and motive of this suspicious death in what will be the first of many cases.

Waiting on Wednesday 7/27: Overseas

“Waiting On” Wednesday is a weekly event, hosted at Breaking the Spine that spotlights upcoming releases that we’re eagerly anticipating.

This week I chose the title Overseas by Beatriz Chantrill Williams. This is a time-travel romance with a setting and characters that I’ve never encountered, and I’m looking forward to reading it. I’ve included the summary below–no cover available yet as far as I can tell.

Expected publication 2011 by G. P. Putnam’s Sons

Julian Ashford is a man out of time: a decorated officer swept off a First World War battlefield into modern-day Manhattan by a force he can’t explain. As Julian Laurence, he’s built an investment empire; yet he shuns attention, desperate to conceal his past and unable to forget the woman who emerged from the rain-darkened shadows of the Western Front to save his life, on the eve of his disappearance from the pages of history.

When Kate Wilson attracts the notice of the legendary Julian Laurence at a business meeting, no one’s more surprised than she is. After all, she’s just an analyst, trying to make her mark in the high-stakes world of international finance without losing herself in its moral thickets. Julian’s brilliant allure – his relentless energy and his extraordinary intellect – all electrify her, but she’s baffled by his mysterious behavior. Why would he fall so hard, so passionately? And what history-transforming secret drives his fateful obsession with her?

Waiting on Wednesday 7/20: Cold Fire

“Waiting On” Wednesday is a weekly event, hosted at Breaking the Spine that spotlights upcoming releases that we’re eagerly anticipating.

This week I chose Cold Fire by Kate Elliott. I have the first in the series, Cold Magic, on my Kindle. Given the steam bath that we have for weather in the upper Midwest, it sounds like the perfect book to help cool things down, so maybe I’ll read it soon. The world of the Spiritwalker series is reminiscent of the “His Dark Materials” series, which I really enjoyed–at least the first two books. I haven’t read The Amber Spyglass yet because I’ve heard that the ending is not-so-happy, and I’m worried it would ruin my wonderful experience with the first two books.

Expected publication: September 26th 2011 by Orbit

Cat and her cousin are key players in a drama of dragons and politics. Everyone wants something from them – including the warlord who’s conquering all Europa and the Cold Mages who dare defy him. But the Master of the Wild Hunt is most dangerous of all. He will command Cat’s loyalty using what she holds most dear.

In a world where science and magic are at war, one girl must save those she loves, or lose everything.

Waiting on Wednesday 7/13: A Midnight Dance

“Waiting On” Wednesday is a weekly event, hosted at Breaking the Spine that spotlights upcoming releases that we’re eagerly anticipating.

This week I chose A Midnight Dance by Lila DiPasqua. For some reason I haven’t read many adaptations of fairy tales. I love watching movies with fairy tale themes such as Ever After and The Slipper and the Rose, which I saw for the first time a couple weeks ago. So I’m sure I’ll enjoy A Midnight Dance just as well!

Expected publication: August 2nd 2011 by Penguin Trade

Inspired by the tale of Cinderella, Lila DiPasqua weaves a steamy story that offers a glass slipper, a dangerous deception, and an impoverished beauty determined to find her handsome prince…and make him pay.

Born into wealth, Sabine Laurent and her twin sister lived a life of luxury, their father’s prestigious theater frequented by royalty and aristocracy alike. And Sabine dreamed of her own prince charming—the devastatingly handsome Jules de Moutier.

That was before the loss of her sister and her family’s fall from grace—a disaster Sabine blames on the Moutier family. Now, with her father’s death, she’s inherited his sizable debt and the responsibility of caring for his spoiled long-time mistress and her two wastrel daughters. But with the help of Sabine’s eccentric friends—the balance of her father’s acting troupe—she plans to get very close to her old infatuation, seduce the rake—and make away with a fortune.

Resisting Jules’s skillful mouth and tantalizing touch is not as easy as Sabine supposed. And soon she must decide whether her desire for vengeance is greater than her desire for her one and only prince…

Waiting on Wednesday 6/22: The Dark Glamour

“Waiting On” Wednesday is a weekly event, hosted at Breaking the Spine that spotlights upcoming releases that we’re eagerly anticipating.

This week I choseThe Dark Glamour by Gabriella Pierce. I read an egalley of the first book in the series, 666 Park Avenue, in one sitting! The ending of 666 Park Avenue is a real cliffhanger, and some of the paranormal aspects are not explained. I’m hoping that The Dark Glamour will provide more of the backstory.

The Dark Glamour by Gabrielle Pierce
Expected publication: September 6th 2011 by HarperCollins Publishers

Jane Boyle married her prince charming and moved into his upper east side castle—but she didn’t get her fairy-tale ending.

It’s hard to live happily ever after when you discover your demanding and controlling mother-in-law is literally a witch, determined to steal the magical powers you didn’t even know you had. Jane narrowly avoided Lynne Doran’s clutches when she escaped on her wedding day, and has been hiding out in New York City. But she can’t hide forever.

When Jane learns of the one thing Lynne wants most, she sets out to provide it, hoping her good turn will persuade her mother-in-law to stop hunting her. Unfortunately, Jane’s daring plan will send her right back into the witches’ den—the Doran clan’s multistory town house on Park Avenue. But thanks to a tricky spell, blond architect Jane will be transformed into Ella, a dark beauty with a whole new look . . . and all of Jane’s budding powers. Though the stakes are life or death, nobody said “Ella” couldn’t have a little fun along the way, too.
